U.S. second gentleman Doug Emhoff, Vice President Kamala Harris’s husband, tested positive for COVID, U.S. President Joe Biden said on Tuesday (March 15).
Biden made the comment at the beginning of his remarks honoring Women’s History Month, where he appeared to stumble over some of his words and Emhoff’s informal title as second gentleman.
Biden mistakenly said “the first lady’s husband” contracted COVID, but he meant to say Emhoff. He was quickly corrected, as he looked over to his wife, first lady Jill Biden, to some laughter in the crowd.
“She’s fine. It’s me that’s not together,” Biden said, later explaining it was Harris’s husband who contracted COVID. Biden said Harris decided not to join the event out of an abundance of caution. “He’s feeling very well, I’m told,” Biden said of Emhoff.
Biden also welcomed members of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer team, past and present, onto the stage, as he thanked women from around the U.S. for joining him in celebrating Women’s History Month at the White House.
