On last day of Olympics, organisers report 26 new Games-related COVID-19 cases

On the last day of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, organisers on Sunday (August 8) reported 26 new Games-related COVID-19 cases, bringing the total since July 1 to 430 cases.

Hours before the closing ceremony, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said the Games had been a success given the uncertainties surrounding the postponed event because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With rain pouring down, Japan is due to hand over the Olympic baton to the next host city, Paris, at a ceremony that starts at 8:00 p.m. local time (1100 GMT).

China were on top of the tally here with 38 golds as of late on Saturday (August 7), with the United States at 36 and Japan at 27.

There are 13 golds up for grabs on Sunday before the closing ceremony.
