India administers 500 million COVID-19 vaccines

India has administered 500 million COVID-19 vaccines, Prime Minister Narenda Modi announced on Saturday (August 7), hailing it as an “important milestone.”

“India is administering more doses per week than the population of many countries in the world,” he added a day after the country passed the 500 million mark.

India opened free vaccination for all adults starting from June 21st, when the country administered a record 8,000,000 plus doses in a day.

Since then, the inoculation drive for daily doses has seen a downward trend.

On Saturday the health minister Mansukh Mandaviya said in a tweet that India approved Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use.

India has been hard hit by the coronavirus, seeing 31,897,413 cases since the start of the pandemic, including 427,488 deaths. On Friday (August 6) it reported 38,700 new cases and 616 deaths.
