Ida makes landfall in LA, Category 4 hurricane

Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana on Sunday (August 29) as an extremely dangerous Category 4 storm, forcing those who did not flee to brace themselves for the toughest test yet of the billions of dollars spent on levee upgrades following Hurricane Katrina 16 years ago.

Video from home security cameras showed water pouring into a beach house in Grand Isle, Louisiana. Christie Angelette, whose parents own the home, told Reuters that cameras had now stopped functioning.

Ida intensified faster than officials predicted, prompting evacuations along the Gulf Coast and business closures. Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards on Saturday warned it could be the state’s worst direct hit since the 1850s.
