COVID vaccines given to Mumbai’s vulnerable in door-to-door drive

Health workers and volunteers from Mumbai’s local authority conducted a door-to-door COVID-19 vaccination campaign on Tuesday (August 3), inoculating vulnerable people who were unable to go to vaccination centres.

Carrying boxes containing COVISHIELD vaccines developed by India’s Serum Institute, Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai’s (MCGM) workers and volunteers performed home visits, in which the relatives of those who were vaccinated saying they were happy with the programme.

The measure comes as Maharashtra state eased COVID-19 restrictions in most districts on Tuesday, including in the financial capital of Mumbai, after a steady decline in new cases.

Shops, malls and parks were allowed to open for longer and offices were allowed to operate at full capacity. However, cinemas, schools and places of worship will remain closed, according to a state government notice late on Monday (August 2).

Maharashtra has been the worst-affected state in India’s COVID-19 outbreak, accounting for more than 6 million of the 31.7 million cases.

In southern Chennai city, an activist rode his customised moped, which showed images of coronavirus and held replicas of COVID-19 vaccine vails, in a bid to spread awareness for the vaccines.

The federal government aims to inoculate all of the country’s estimated 944 million adults by December, target health experts have said is ambitious. So far, India has administered 452 million doses.
