Afghan refugees in India worry about those left behind

As he prepares Afghan flatbread at his food stall in New Delhi, Afghan refugee and street vendor Abdul Kahar says he fears for his country, now under Taliban rule.

“The Taliban will become fearless”, he said on Tuesday (August 31), a day after the withdrawal of the last U.S. troops from Afghanistan, which marked the end of a 20-year war that left the Islamist group stronger than it was in 2001.

Kahar is concerned about those who were left behind in the war-torn country and says fighters will spread terror and impose strict restrictions on Afghans, especially women.

Also on Tuesday, Afghan refugees staged a sit-in protest outside the United Nations Refugee Agency office, calling for refugee cards and resettlement options to a third country as well as more security.

The Taliban entered Kabul on August 15 after rapidly taking over much of the country, prompting chaotic scenes at the airport as crowds scrambled to escape.

Taliban fighters brutally enforced their strict interpretation of Islamic law from 1996 to 2001, not least by oppressing women, and the world is watching now to see if the movement will form a more moderate and inclusive government in the months ahead.

Thousands of Afghans have already fled the country, fearing Taliban reprisals.
