U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris arrives in Guatemala on first overseas trip in office

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris arrived in Guatemala on Sunday (June 3) on her first overseas trip since taking office.

Guatemalan officials, including Foreign Minister Pedro Brolo, were on hand to welcome her.

Harris’ arrival was later than originally expected after a technical issue with her plane forced her to return to Joint Base Andrews an hour after taking off. Planes were switched and Harris departed a second time later in the afternoon.

Harris will spend a few days in Guatemala and then will travel to Mexico one day. She is there to participate in discussions about the root causes of migration from Central America’s Northern Triangle countries to the United States.

The Biden administration is expected to announce measures to tackle smuggling and human trafficking on Monday in Guatemala, a senior administration official said on Sunday.
