Jeff Bezos to join winner of seat on Blue Origin space flight

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his brother will join the winner of an auction for a seat on Blue Origin’s New Shepard spacecraft, the billionaire said on Monday (June 7).

“Ever since I was five years old, I’ve dreamed of traveling to space. On July 20th, I will take that journey with my brother. The greatest adventure, with my best friend,” Bezos said in an Instagram post that was reposted by Blue Origin on Twitter.

Blue Origin is the private spaceflight company started by Amazon founder Bezos, which faces stiff competition from Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

The rocket company is targeting July 20 for its first suborbital sightseeing trip on its spacecraft, a landmark moment in a competition to usher in a new era of private commercial space travel.

Blue Origin completed a successful test flight of its New Shepard NS-15 rocket in April. It was the 15th launch of New Shepard. The previous fourteen were also successful.

The rocket can fly to the edge of space where a booster and crew capsule are separated. The booster can make a vertical landing near a launch pad back on earth and the capsule comes downs with the aid of parachutes.

Blue Origin has fallen far behind SpaceX on orbital transportation, and lost out to SpaceX and United Launch Alliance (ULA) on billions of dollars’ worth of U.S. national security launch contracts which begin in 2022.

Now, Blue Origin is battling to win a competition with SpaceX and Dynetics to develop a new lunar lander for NASA’s potentially multibillion-dollar push to return humans to the moon in a few years.
