Harris says “will go again” to U.S. southern border

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris said on Tuesday (June 8) she will again visit the U.S. border with Mexico, after criticism from Republican lawmakers for not prioritizing the shared frontier.

After meeting with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in Mexico City, Harris told reporters she had “been to the border before and will go again”.

Harris also said she had a “very productive” bilateral meeting with Lopez Obrador and made made clear the U.S. considers Mexico “a partner” to tackle the migration issue.

She told reporters she also shared with Lopez Obrador her concern about the drug fentanyl entering the U.S. via Mexico

Earlier in the day, Harris and Lopez Obrador witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding about the work the two countries’ development agencies do in Central America. They then met for talks billed as focused on “root causes” of migration.

The administration of President Joe Biden has been struggling with the number of migrant children and families arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border, mainly from Central America. Biden has tasked Harris, who is on her first trip abroad since taking office, with trying to solve the issue.
