U.S. House narrowly passes $1.9 billion bill to increase Capitol security

By a narrow margin, the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday (May 20) approved $1.9 billion to boost security at the Capitol in response to the January 6th attack by a mob of Donald Trump’s supporters.

The final vote tally was 213 in favor and 212 against, with three progressive democrats voting present.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that the bill should have had bipartisan support.

“Protecting the security of the Capitol so we can do our constitutional work on behalf of the American people should not be controversial,” Pelosi said.

“Today, in passing this legislation, the House is taking a strong step forward to bring healing to our congressional community and to ensure that this… horror can never happen again.”

The money allocated in the bill includes funding for increased fortifications on the Capitol building, as well as a quick reaction force to aid Capitol police.

Trump’s supporters violently stormed the Capitol, some brandishing weapons, Confederate flags and anti-Semitic T-shirts.

Their goal was stopping Congress’ certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election.

The rioting resulted in five people dead, including a Capitol Police officer. Dozens more were injured and two other police officers subsequently took their own lives.

The U.S. Senate, which is split 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans, will have to pass the bill in order for U.S. President Job Biden to sign it into law.
