Three people injured in New York’s Times Square shooting

Three people, including a four-year-old girl, were shot in New York City’s Times Square after gunfire broke out in a dispute that they appeared not to be involved in, the city’s top police official, Dermot Shea, said on Saturday (May 8).

Shea said the police were investigating a person of interest but added no details to the context of the dispute. A four-year-old and 23-year-old were shot in the leg, and a 43-year-old in the foot, Shea added.

Crime rates have jumped in New York and other American cities in the past year, with explanations for the surge vary.

The video filmed by an eyewitness, Jose Villanueva, showed police intervening and an officer carrying the four-year-old girl to an ambulance.
