Chicago mayor defends decision to grant anniversary interviews to ‘journalists of color’

Lori Lightfoot, Chicago’s first female black mayor, on Thursday (May 20) explained her decision to grant interviews on the 2nd anniversary of her swearing-in exclusively to reporters of color.

Lightfoot made her announcement on Wednesday (May 19) in a series of tweets in which she said it was a “shame that in 2021, the City Hall press corps is overwhelmingly White in a city where more than half of the city identifies as Black, Latino, AAPI or Native American.”

Questioned by a reporter about the decision, Lightfoot stood her ground.

“The fact is, is that this press corps, does not reflect the diversity of this city and it makes a difference in the kinds of coverage,” said Lightfoot. “It’s way past time for the city hall press corps and the people who do the hiring and make the decisions to get the memo.”

Lightfoot was a political newcomer when she was elected in 2019. The former federal prosecutor is also the first openly gay mayor of the third-largest U.S. city.
