Man United & Liverpool fans protest against club owners

Hundreds of Manchester United fans gathered outside Old Trafford on Saturday (April 24) to protest against the club’s American owners following the failed attempt to form a breakaway European Super League.

Proposals for a partially closed competition involving 12 of Europe’s top clubs in England, Spain and Italy collapsed on Wednesday (April 21) when most of the founders pulled out amidst stinging criticism from fans, governing bodies and the government.

United were one of those 12 clubs and the club’s co-chairman, Joel Glazer was also named the Super League’s vice-chairman.

On Saturday, United fans were chanting “We want Glazers out” and the club’s original colours of green and gold were prominent among the crowd.

Earlier on Saturday, there were a few Liverpool supporters protesting outside Anfield against Fenway Sports Group, the club’s US-based owner, for its role in the European Super League.

However, there were also many Liverpool fans who applauded the players and manager Juergen Klopp when they arrived on the team bus ahead of their Premier League match against Newcastle United.

Supporters’ protests have been key to the U-turn from the English clubs who had signed up for the Super League with Chelsea fans also protesting outside Stamford Bridge on Tuesday (April 20) before their game against Brighton & Hove Albion.

On Friday (April 23) thousands of Arsenal fans protested outside the Emirates Stadium in London to protest against their American owner, Stan Kroenke.
