Emerald Fennell wins best original screenplay Oscar

Director Emerald Fennell has claimed the Oscar for best adapted screenplay for her film “Promising Young Woman”.

Fennell said she wrote the script for the movie prior to the start of the Me Too movement and set out to turn a traditional revenge tale on its head.

On accepting her award, Fennell said, “Oh my gosh. They said write a speech and I didn’t because I just didn’t ever think this would happen. I’m going to be in trouble with Steven Soderbergh, I’m so sorry, I don’t want him to be cross with me.

“Oh my God it is so heavy and so cold – I’m going to put it down.”

The daughter of British jewellery designer Theo Fennell, Fennell made her name by playing Camilla Parker Bowles in the Netflix series “The Crown” and running the second season of the hit show “Killing Eve”.

She made her feature film directorial debut with “Promising Young Woman”.

Fennell’s Oscar victory saw fellow directors Chloe Zhao for “Nomadland” and Sacha Baron Cohen for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” miss out on the top prize.
