Alief ISD teacher creates a gardening program to help students affected by the pandemic

ALIEF – An Alief ISD teacher has found a way to slowly bring children back to some form of normalcy following a stressful year of an ongoing pandemic.

Hicks Elementary teacher, Kyrstan McDuffie-Bass, created a gardening club for her students called “Inner City Greens”.

Inner City Greens” is more than just a gardening club for kids. It puts a strong emphasis on social development and personal growth” she said.

Hicks is made up of almost 84% of lower-income challenged families according to principal Mary Kesler. This small but mighty gesture of gardening has become an extremely powerful teaching tool for all kinds of things in life.

“Not only are we learning academics, but we’re also building those skills that you’re going to need to survive in this world,” said McDuffie-Bass.

McDuffie-Bass, teachers special education at the elementary and created the program with a very specific goal in mind: to use the project-based learning method as a way to connect with and engage students.

The group meets every Saturday morning for a few hours to work in the garden and practice yoga.

The program started in late February for students in the 3rd and 4th grade level at Hicks. Kesler hopes to expand overtime to get the entire school involved.
