Yangon protesters defiant as security forces open fire

Protesters in Yangon stood their ground behind shields and barricades on Sunday (March 14) as security forces opened fire and lobbed tear gas canisters, killing at least three, witnesses and domestic media said.

A social media live stream from the flashpoint in Hlaing Tharyar, an industrial zone in Yangon, showed protesters wearing hard hats and crouching behind homemade shields as the confronted armed security forces.

The death toll on Sunday reached five. At least 13 people were killed on Saturday (March 13) , one of the bloodiest days since the Feb. 1 coup, witnesses and domestic media said.

More than 80 people had been killed as of Saturday since military’s seizure of power last month, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners advocacy group said. Over 2,100 people have been arrested, it said. The acting leader of Myanmar’s parallel civilian government Mahn Win Khaing Than, who is on the run along with most senior officials from the ruling National League for Democracy Party, vowed to pursue a “revolution” to overturn the junta in his first public address since the military takeover on February 1. He also said the government will seek to give people the legal right to defend themselves.
