Pope Francis speaking to media onboard a papal flight heading to Iraq on Friday (March 5) said he was happy to be making a trip again.
The pontiff briefly spoke to reporters during the flight heading towards Iraq where he will make the first visit by any pope.
“I am happy to be making trips again,” he said.
The Iraq trip is his first outside Italy since November 2019.
“This is an emblematic trip and it is a duty towards a land that has been martyred for so many years,” he said before donning a mask and greeting each reporter individually.
Whilst speaking to the media the pontiff did not shake hands.
All media and personnel onboard have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
