Biden calls Myanmar security forces opening fire at funeral “absolutely outrageous”

U.S. President Joe Biden said the situation in Myanmar was “absolutely outrageous” after security forces opened fire at a funeral on Sunday (March 28).

The country had gathered to mourn 114 people killed the previous day in the worst crackdown on protests since the military coup on Feb. 1.

Mourners fled the shooting at a service for 20-year-old student Thae Maung Maung in Bago near the commercial capital Yangon and there were no immediate reports of casualties, three people in the town told Reuters.

“It’s terrible, it’s absolutely outrageous. And then based on the reporting I’ve gotten, an awful lot of people have been killed totally unnecessarily,” Biden told reporters as he left Delaware to return to the White House.
